MARYLAND’S FIRST DISTRICT — In an unprecedented display of regional grassroots support, six local Indivisible groups spanning seven counties in Maryland’s First Congressional District have formally endorsed Democrat Dan Schwartz for Congress.
The groups joined forces this year to form the MD01 Election Coalition, which is coordinating field organizing, postcard writing and digital advertising aimed at replacing Republican Rep. Andy Harris. Organizers believe this marks the first time a broad citizen coalition has organized and worked together across the sprawling district during Harris’ 15 years in Congress.
“Dan Schwartz offers a compelling contrast to Harris and the Trump authoritarian agenda he supports. Andy has lost touch with people in this district. Dan will fight to lower costs for groceries, gas, healthcare and housing.”
— Silvia Gonzalez Roman, founder of Eastern Shore Indivisible and coalition leader
Day of Action on Kent Island
Organizers are intensifying their push with the Kent Island Day of Action on Sunday, September 20, from 1–3 p.m. at the Park N Ride, 201 Narrows Road, Grasonville, MD 21638. The public event features remarks by Schwartz, a rally with refreshments and an afternoon of canvassing.
Schwartz is a former consumer watchdog who spent 14 years enforcing financial and banking regulations. He is pledging to close tax loopholes, support working families and cut red tape for small businesses. His campaign has earned endorsements from Maryland leaders including Gov. Wes Moore, U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin and Maryland House Speaker Joseline Peña-Melnyk. Former Republican U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, who represented the district for 18 years, has also endorsed Schwartz.
A District-Wide Grassroots Campaign
Grassroots opposition to Harris drew attention this spring when Cambridge Indivisible placed two billboards in Cambridge, Harris’ hometown, criticizing his record on rising costs and healthcare. The billboards direct voters to TheAndyFiles.com. Activists now have 11 billboards across the district, from Salisbury to Kent Island and Harford County.
“We’re doing this because Andy Harris is an extremist who prioritizes the right-wing Freedom Caucus he leads in Congress over his own constituents. At a time when people are facing higher grocery and electricity bills, he’s voting to slash Medicaid funds and drive up the price of health insurance.”
— DeLane Lewis, founder of Together We Will: Harford County Upper Chesapeake
Leslie Walker, co-founder of Talbot Indivisible, said Harris’ support for war with Iran and tariffs also motivated the groups to work together. “He’s supporting Trump’s tariffs, which are boosting prices for everything and hitting Maryland farmers hard,” she said.
Gonzalez Roman, a former federal prosecutor, started Eastern Shore Indivisible in response to what she describes as the Trump administration’s attack on the rule of law and democratic norms. As the organization grew, she saw an opportunity for closer coordination and reached out to other organizers to form the MD01 Election Coalition.
The Endorsing Organizations
The coalition brings together thousands of volunteers from all 11 counties in the district. Six member organizations have formally endorsed Schwartz:
- Eastern Shore Indivisible — Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Kent and Caroline counties
- Together We Will: Harford County Upper Chesapeake
- DEAR America — Harford County
- Cecil County Indivisible
- Indivisible Worcester MD
- Talbot Indivisible
Additional Election Coalition partners include Cambridge Indivisible, Baltimore County Indivisible and Crabs on the Shore / Indivisible DelMarVa in Wicomico County. Indivisible groups on Maryland’s Western Shore are also supporting organizers in District 1.
“It is time for change. We believe Dan Schwartz is the right person to replace Harris. He champions regular people over billionaires and will work to make all of our lives better.”
— DeLane Lewis
Gonzalez Roman said Schwartz is bringing people together across party lines who are fed up with what is happening in Washington. “Once in office, Dan Schwartz will take on the corruption in Washington and hold government officials accountable,” she said.
“This election is far bigger than politics as usual. Our nation is at a critical juncture, and voters have a real choice to help restore sanity in DC. By electing Dan Schwartz, who brings a new voice to Washington, our district can create a brighter future.”
— Silvia Gonzalez Roman
